Public transportation

Getting to Vienna

If you are flying to Vienna International Airport, there are several public transport options to arrive in the city. The airport is not within the city limits, so any tickets purchased for the Vienna city area are not valid for this journey.
Besides private transportation, such as taxis, Ubers, and similar services, you have the following options:

  • ÖBB Railjet Train (stops at Main train station/Wien Hauptbahnhof/Wien Hbf)
About 4.50EUR (= 2.10EUR for the ticket from the airport to the Vienna city boundary + 2.40EUR for the ticket within Vienna)
Tickets can be purchased online, in the ÖBB app, from the ÖBB counter, or at the ÖBB ticket machines at the airport.
  • Express Train S7/REX7 (stops at Wien Mitte/Landstraße and Praterstern)
About 4.50EUR (= 2.10EUR for the ticket from the airport to the Vienna city boundary + 2.40EUR for the ticket within Vienna)
Tickets can be purchased online, in the ÖBB app, from the ÖBB counter, or at the ÖBB ticket machines at the airport.
  • City Airport Train (stops at Wien Mitte/Landstraße)
    About 14.90EUR
Tickets can be purchased online, from designated ticket machines, and the CAT counter at the airport.
  • Vienna Airport Lines (three bus lines running from the airport to various points in Vienna)
    About 11.00EUR
Tickets can be purchased online, from designated ticket machines, and directly from the driver (cash only!).

More information can be found on the city’s information website.

If you’re taking another mode of transport, you will most likely arrive within the city zone.

Getting around Vienna

Vienna has a unified public transport system, i.e., all types of public transport within the city are covered by one ticket. Tickets can be purchased online, in the WienMobil app, from the Wiener Linien counters within train stations, or at the Wiener Linien ticket machines, typically found only at metro stations. They can also be bought at some tobacco stores.

There are various packages that you can choose from, all described here.

Tickets bought online or in the app are immediately valid from the moment of purchase. Physical tickets need to be validated before use. The validators are blue machines found at entrances of metro and S-Bahn stations.
In either case, make sure you have your ticket with you until the end of your journey, at least until you leave the station.
