Cultural and Leisure Activities

There are no talks planned for Thursday afternoon. We encourage the participants to explore Vienna and experience why it is one of the most livable cities in the world.

If you are unsure where to look for recommendations, the city has a comprehensive and user-friendly website: https://www.wien.info/en, as well as a city guide app.

Narrentum

Within the university campus, you can visit the Collection of Anatomical Pathology in the Madhouse Tower (Narrenturm). The campus is built on parts of the grounds of the former General Hospital Vienna (altes allgemeines Krankenhaus Wien, altes AKH), and the collection in the Madhouse Tower is an important and fascinating insight into the medical practices in the past.

The University offers the participants of SampTA a guided tour of the Campus and the Madhouse Tower, provided there are at least 10 participants. They can only accommodate 17 participants, so participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please sign up for the tour when you pick up your badge, since we have to inform them by the end of Monday (28.07.2025) whether there is a sufficient number of participants.

The tour begins at 14:00. The tickets are 16EUR, and you can pay before the start of the tour in cash or by card.

Votivkirche

Close by to the campus is the Votivkirche, one of Vienna’s most famous churches. There will be a guided tour of the church provided there are at least 15 participants. Please sign up for the tour when you pick up your badge, since we have to inform them by the end of Monday (28.07.2025) whether there is a sufficient number of participants.

The tour begins at 14:00 and lasts about 90 minutes. The tickets are 12EUR, and you can pay before the start of the tour in cash only.

Film Festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz

Vienna’s open-air film festival in front of the city hall takes place parallel to SampTA. The festival is celebrating its 35th birthday, and could be a great place to spend your afternoon.

The city hall is within walking distance of the campus, and the festival has free admission. You can read more about the festival on its website.

Museums and Galleries

Vienna has an abundance of museums and galleries for any taste and interest. The most famous ones are almost all in the first district, such as

There are also many museums dedicated to famous rulers, artists and scientists who lived in Vienna, often housed where they used to live. Some of the most popular ones are the Sisi Museum, the Sigmund Freud Museum, and the Beethoven Museum.

More recommendations can be found on the city’s tourist website. They also list places to visit and activities to try during your stay in Vienna.
